The Hills of Headwaters
Step outside Toronto’s back door….and discover the Hills of Headwaters.
Alton is located at the heart of the Hills of Headwaters, a unique getaway destination for residents of the GTA and visitors from places further afoot. Situated less than 100 km north-west of Toronto, and less than an hour’s drive away, this region of unsurpassed rural beauty and sophistication, encompasses the communities of Caledon, Dufferin, Erin, Mono, Orangeville & Shelburne. The Niagara Escarpment, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, crosses through our scenic farmland, carving out our magnificent landscape of hills, valleys, streams and rivers.
Our spectacular rural landscape offers the perfect backdrop for your visit, but is certainly not the only reason to explore our region! While you meander through our historic towns and villages you will discover world-class artisans, championship golf, luxurious spas, exceptional accommodations, award-winning cuisine, and unique antique and retail shops. Or make it an art day trip to six unique galleries with the work of hundreds of artists, many working in their studios.
The Alton Mill provides the perfect place to start (or end) your hike. The Alton Side Trail is the link between the easterly terminus of the 280 km long Grand Valley Trail, and the Bruce Trail at the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. The Alton Side Trail meanders across the Alton Mill property and continues up to the Pinnacle, a scenic outlook providing spectacular view of the rolling Caledon hills. (click for PDF file of map)
