POND REHABILITATION
The historic mill pond is a prominent feature of the Alton Mill site, being highly visible and accessible from the main street of the village, and potentially providing a beautiful backdrop for the cultural and tourism events planned for the Mill property. The creation of the pond by damming Shaw’s Creek did, however, create negative consequences for fish habitat (warming the water and blocking spawning routes). Siltation of the pond is detracting from its visual and recreational utility and work is required on the dam and retaining walls.

It is proposed to create a public/private partnership to rehabilitate the pond, dam and bridge with the aim being to improve the fish habitat and maximize the pond’s recreational potential.

As illustrated on the conceptual site plan shown here, options to be explored include a fish ladder, separation of the pond from the main creek flow to reduce the warming effect, naturalization of part of the pond, and creation of a trail system and boardwalk to enhance public access to the pond. Further options include a fish habitat demonstration area and an aquatic botanical garden area. A section of the pond could be used for ice skating in winter and remote-controlled boats in summer.

It is intended that the pond area will eventually be managed by the local municipality and/or a community group working closely with the Credit Valley Conservation (e.g. “Friends of the Alton Mill Pond”). Anyone who is interested in getting involved is invited to contact the mill owners.
