MILL RESTORATION PROCESS
The Alton Mill has been lovingly rehabilitated into an arts and heritage centre with a mix of art studios, workshops, offices for creative professionals, specialty retail, event space, café and an industrial heritage exhibit.

This community of creative people provides a convivial atmosphere for collaboration and inspiration.

Throughout the rehabilitation process, work was done (and continues to be done) in adherence with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. Modern building elements were inserted with careful regard for the designated features, sensitively revealing the structural elements of the buildings.

Modern high-efficiency heating and ventilation throughout, air conditioning on the second floor and new energy efficient, heritage inspired, operable double-hung windows on the upper two floors were installed. This melding of modern systems and structures with the old has resulted in a truly unique and comfortable working environment.

Careful attention has been given to protecting the historic character of the site, as well. Through a combination of tree preservation, landscaping and environmentally sensitive design of the parking areas and stormwater management systems, the Alton Mill complex is both attractive and “green”. With the addition of new site features including two exterior courtyards, a riverside path, and waterfall viewing platform, the Alton Mill is a beautiful and inspiring place to work, shop and visit.
