ALTON MILL GALLERY
Summer Sojourn: a solo exhibition by Sonja Mortimer
Saturday August 11 to Sunday September 12, 2010
This exciting mixed-media showcase features the work of Headwaters artist Sonja Mortimer. Summer Sojourn juxtaposes acrylics, collages and encaustic paintings, demonstrating the breadth of Mortimer's artistic skill.
Best known for her lively collages that echo the Bento boxes of Japan, Mortimer has included several of these pieces in this show. Using a variety of Washi paper, gold leaf, acrylics and assorted natural and man-made fibres, the collages reflect Mortimer's continuing fascination with texture, colour and spatial organization.
But the artist's talents and body of work span various media. As a painter, Mortimer derives her greatest delight from exploring structure and ordered spaces. “The subject matter of my art is essentially landscape reinterpreted, altered or transformed,” she says.
A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and of the Fine Art Program at York University, Mortimer started her artistic journey painting watercolours. She then moved to ceramic relief sculptures and later to porcelain jewellery. But now she has returned to painting, working in acrylic mixed media, and most recently encaustic.
In Summer Sojourn Sonja Mortimer shares a body of work that is complex yet soothing, colourful, beautifully composed and lavishly layered. These are creations that invite us to linger if only for a brief moment of reflection.
