Celtic Illuminations Painting Workshop

Bring a little creative light into the darkness of winter!

DATE:  Saturday, February 11, 2023
TIME:  10 am to 4 pm (Approximately 5-6 hours with a 45 minute break for lunch)
LOCATION:  In-person @ Studio #206 on the upper level of The Alton Mill Arts Centre
FEE:  $175 + HST per person

Create and paint your own decorated and “illuminated” initials, word, or name in traditional Celtic style.

This enjoyable full day workshop is an introduction to the beautiful art form known as “illuminated lettering” that is often seen in Celtic art such as the famous Book of Kells. “Illuminations” are typically stylized and very symbolic, often featuring knot-work, animal motifs and abstract designs that decorate the enlarged first letter of a word or manuscript.

Join Mill artist CJ Shelton as she provides lots of practical help in understanding the illumination process and some easy ways of creating the “over/under” weaving effect as well as other Celtic elements. Participants will be asked to choose either their initials or a short word to use for creating their own unique design on a 12”x12” canvas using a combination of stencils, free-hand drawing and acrylic paints and inks.

This workshop is designed to help you produce a simple finished art piece of your own that is ready to hang. No previous art experience is necessary. If you enjoy doodling, colouring or painting designs you will love this relaxing day of creativity and companionship.

All art materials (canvas, brushes and paints) are supplied. Please bring your own lunch as we will be taking a 45 minute break for some nourishment.

This is an in-person workshop and limited to 5 participants. Please be advised that masks may be requested to be worn if Covid protocols are put in place again.
