Photography guidelines

Alton Mill Arts Centre is a working arts and cultural destination. We ask all photographers and their clients to help us preserve the character of the site and respect the people who work, create and visit here.

Respect our artists and tenants

Our studios, galleries, shops and other businesses are active workplaces. A photography permit does not automatically grant access to interior spaces, artist studios, exhibitions, retail areas or private event spaces.

Please obtain permission before photographing inside these spaces or featuring artwork, products or individuals in your images.

Be considerate of other visitors

The Alton Mill remains open to the public during regular operating hours unless otherwise arranged. Photography must not block pathways, entrances, exits, public access or business operations.

A permit does not reserve a location exclusively for your use.

Protect our historic property and natural surroundings

The Alton Mill is a historic site with distinctive architectural features and a sensitive natural setting. Please do not climb on structures, enter restricted areas, disturb wildlife or damage vegetation.

Equipment, props and setups

Handheld photography equipment is generally acceptable for approved shoots. Tripods, lighting equipment, reflectors, large props, furniture, backdrops and other setups must be disclosed in advance and may require additional approval.

Drones are prohibited unless specifically authorized in writing.

Confetti, glitter, smoke effects, open flames and other materials or activities that could damage the property or natural environment are not permitted without written authorization.

Scheduling and site access

Photoshoots must take place during the approved date and time. Access to particular areas may be restricted because of weather, maintenance, special events, public programming or tenant activities.

Please allow time to arrange your shoot in advance, particularly if you require a specific location or interior access.

Commercial use and image permissions

A photography permit grants permission to conduct the approved photoshoot on the property. It does not grant ownership of Alton Mill Arts Centre's name, logos, artwork or other intellectual property, nor does it replace any permissions required from artists, tenants, models or other rights holders.

Alton Mill Arts Centre reserves the right to decline or restrict a proposed shoot where necessary to protect the property, its tenants, visitors or operations.

How to book a photography permit

Couples getting married at the Alton Mill Arts Centre receive an exclusive photography permit for their wedding day. We strongly recommend contacting us before confirming your photoshoot date or making arrangements with your photographer.

To help us assess your request, please provide:

  • Your preferred date and time;

  • The type and purpose of your photoshoot;

  • The number of people attending;

  • The locations you would like to use;

  • Any equipment, props or special requirements;
