Around Alton

Hills of Headwaters

Alton is in Caledon , part of the Headwaters region less than an hour north-west of Toronto and 10 minutes south of Orangeville . The Niagara Escarpment , a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, crosses through the scenic farmland, carving out a magnificent landscape of hills, valleys, streams and rivers.

Beyond the spectacular rural landscape, the region resonates with a proud history and vibrant culture. While you meander through our historic towns and villages you will discover world-class artisans , championship golf , luxurious spas, exceptional accommodations, award-winning cuisine , and unique antique and retail shops. Or make it an art day trip to six unique galleries with the work of hundreds of artists, many working in their studios.

The Alton Mill provides the perfect place to start (or end) your hike. The Alton Side Trail is the link between the easterly terminus of the 280 km long Grand Valley Trail , and the Bruce Trail (map #15) at the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park . The trail meanders through the Alton Mill property up to the Alton Pinnacle, a scenic outlook providing a spectacular view of the rolling Caledon hills. ( click for PDF map )
