For ancient peoples the Winter Solstice was a sacred turning point in Nature’s cycle that marked the shortest day of the year and the promise of the Sun’s return. Once honoured with huge bonfires and plenty of feasting and merriment, some of the magic and meaning of that ancient festival can be recaptured in this lovely annual workshop hosted by artist CJ Shelton.

Since the earliest of times candles have held special meaning, not only as a welcoming light in the darkness but to mark sacred occasions. Such rituals have been around for centuries and fulfil a role in many aspects of our lives. By decorating your own special candle with specific symbols, words and other special tokens you can create a new tradition – your own miniature sacred fire to light on Solstice Eve.

CJ will guide you in “coding” intentions and wishes for the year ahead with one of the ancient alphabets known as “Ogham” (Celtic) or the Runes (Norse). You will then carve those intentions, written in their secret language, into your candle and “illuminate” the them with colours of your choice. As you carve, your intentions and prayers will be worked into the wax which, once the candle is lit, will radiate them out into the darkness and throughout the year.

This is an enjoyable and meaningful activity plus a way of creating a new ritual for the holiday season for yourself and your family. While making your candle you can enjoy the magical atmosphere of CJ’s nature-filled as she tells stories about the First Light and how so many of our current Christmas customs originated in ancient cultural traditions that honoured the cycles of Nature.

All are welcome although please note this workshop is not suitable for children. All materials supplied, including candle.
